Finding your calling in life can be a source of great anxiety. We put it right up there with knowing God’s will or learning our true purpose in life.Part of the confusion comes about because some people use these terms interchangeably, while others define them in specific ways….
VERY relevant for high school/college aged people like me, who are seeking their calling.
There are people (and I have been guilty of it myself) who say that when we are Christians, God gives the power to overcome sin. He does not. God does not give the Christian power to overcome sin. If he did, you would surely be self-righteous, proud, and self-sufficient.
God comes into you…
School. Work. Tests. Relationships. Money problems.
A lot of “little stuff” has been overwhelming me lately. God has been telling me through many people and devotionals and Bible verses that He is greater than all of those. If I focus on Him and his greatness, my life will fall into place. With those thoughts in mind, I read part of Hebrews 13 and Revelation.
Our privileges and blessings in Christ are literally innumerable. When I realize just HOW MUCH I have been blessed, my problems seem pretty small. In Hebrews 13, the author has been talking about how difficult it had been for people to reach God throughout the Old Testament because their sins separated them from God. At Mount Sinai, all the people had to stay FAR, FAR away from God’s mountain, because his holiness and perfection would kill them. They shrank away in fear and awe from God. Since Jesus came and died for us to make us holy, we can now be close to God. Verse 22 of Hebrews 13 starts in on how amazing our God is, and the things we have been blessed with.
Hebrews 13:22-24
“But you have come to Mount Zion, to the heavenly Jerusalem, the city of the LIVING GOD. You have come to thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly, to the church of the firstborn, whose names are written in heaven. You have come to God, the judge of all men, to the spirits of righteous men made perfect, to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.”
and verse 28:
“Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that CANNOT BE SHAKEN, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with REVERENCE and AWE.”
(all emphasis mine)
My mind is totally blown with the glory of God that we will enjoy forever and ever, the blessings that we can soak up every single day, and the greatness of God’s kingdom. I wanted to find a little bit more about the majesty of God, and flipped to Revelation. Immediately, my eyes fell on Revelation 1:17-18:
“When I saw Him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said, “Do not be afraid. I AM THE FIRST AND LAST. I AM THE LIVING ONE; I was dead, and behold I am ALIVE FOREVER AND EVER! And I hold the keys of DEATH and Hades.”
Wow. My problems are nothing when my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ is walking beside me, shining beauty and light into my life. He so outshines my problems, I forget they exist. I still have a big paper due in an hour, and very little money for Christmas shopping, but if He can make the stars sing, then He can handle my little problems.
